When I refresh all my feeds to update, I just find it easiest to then go right into the downloads tab and then activate the pause button. My feeds will update with downloads ready for download and then I go down the list and delete the ones I’m not interested in downloading and then activate the pause button again which now says enable. Since I’ve got over sixty feeds, it sometimes takes a bit for everything to get updated so I just go do whatever else I want on the phone in the meantime.
