For me, on the 4S, VO dies right when I launch the app. I haven't tried it by
closing VO before launching.

What I do is when I double tap the add button and VoiceOver dies, I doubletap
with two fingers to bring VoiceOber back on and I do another two finger double
To keep voiceover and stop music playing. That always works for me.

Esther, as per usual, you are full of lengthy, sound advice. There are a
couple things to add here. My Fire 2 app dies as soon as I open it. It not only
dies, but the screen is frozen, so nothing can be acted upon. I have had
sighted assistance look at what happens and nothing we do changes anything.
Now, this might be different on other people’s devices. If, however, you have
my problem, I would suggest that you turn VoiceOver off before you open the
app. Then follow Esther’s very concise instructions. On the other hand, if your
app does not die right away, her instructions can likely be followed to the
letter.

Let’s hope Rode brings back the functionality of this app.

    Thanks again Esther.

Hi Neal, Brent, Cokes, and Others who asked about FiRe 2,

Neal's correct that earlier versions of FiRe 2 from January at the
beginning of this year, up to the last version (released May 28, 2013), worked
with VoiceOver. The FiRe 2 app got purchased by RØDE microphones, who will be
taking over support for the app from Audiofile Engineering. They announced
this on the RØDE microphones web site on July 2nd.

If you have an older version of the app that you can revert to, by deleting
the latest version on your iOS device and using iTunes on your computer to sync
this across to your device, you can still use the app. There's also a clunky
way to get the audio back using the latest version, provided that you don't
want to change the recording specs for bit rate on the configuration screen.
It's based on being to navigate the controls of the screen by knowing where the
control sequence is without audio feedback from VoiceOver, because you lose the
VOiceOver audio when you double tap the "Recordings List Configure Input"
button in the bottom left corner of the "Recordings" screen, and you don't get
it back until you double tap the "Recordings List Add" button in the bottom
right corner of the same "Recordings" screen.

So, if you aren't changing the hardware configuration of recording setup or
the recording bit rate, which is set to 44.1 KHz by default., do the following
when you start a new recording:

    1. Double tap the "Recordings List Add" button in the bottom right corner
of the "Recordings" screen. This is where you lose audio from VoiceOver,
because the app launches the configuration screen, as though you double tapped
the "Recordings List Configure Input" button. However, focus will be on the
"Cancel, back" button, so double tap to get out of the configuration screen.

    2. You'll be taken back to the "Recordings" screen, still without VoiceOver
audio. Do a four finger tap on the bottom half of the screen to move to the
last element of the screen, which is the "Recordings List Add" button, and then
double tap.

    3. At this point you'll be in the screen for the recording you just added,
and should be able to record normally. If you don't have the "Record" button,
navigate to the "Settings" button at the bottom of the screen and double tap.
Navigate to "Transport" and make sure that "Button Controls" switch under the
Record button heading of the Transport screen is set to "on". Then navigate
back to your recording and record as usual.

Once you've done this, you can add recordings with the "Recordings List
Add" button on the Recordings screen and make new recordings as long as the app
is open without losing VoiceOver. But if you close the app, you'll have to go
through this again to start your recordings.

I haven't used additional stereo mic connections with FiRe. If you want to
save those settings, I think that when you reach the configure screen, after
about 5 or so seconds of checking for your hardware configuration, the app will
add stereo channels to the end of the screen. Neal can probably tell you
whether this is selected by default. If you want to save this setting, and it
is selected by default, just flick twice to the right and double tap. You're
moving from the default focus of the "Cancel" button at the top left of the
configure screen, to the screen heading, and then to the "Save" button. Again,
you'll be at the Recordings screen, and will want to pick up at step 2., where
you do a four finger tap on the bottom half of the screen to move to the
"Recordings List Add" button and double tap to get back your VoiceOver audio.

Can people try this and check that it works for them?

    HTH. Cheers,

    Esther

I bought this thing awhile ago. Besides having to use the Focus 40 blue in
place of hearing audio from VO, is there a way to not have it turn the audio
all the way off when launching it? I suppose it's $6 down the drain, most
likely, but thought I'd ask.

I just got this from the developer.

I had ask when the upade that would fix the voiceover problems would be
out. Their answer follows.

“It will be available in RØDE Rec 2.8. As you might have heard, RØDE
Microphones acquired FiRe a couple of weeks ago. We imagine version 2.8 will
ship late August.”
