You only have room for so much food, and once you reach that limit, you
won't accumulate any more. Your food status is at the top of the screen.
You can get to it with a two finger sweep up followed by two swipes
right. It'll tell you how much food you currently have and how much food
capacity you have. For example, I just checked, and my current status is
349/430 food.
Your food capacity increases by 5 each time you level up. Also, in the
Food tab of the Build page, you'll see that some places increase how
quickly you produce food and others will increase your capacity. Keep
this in mind when spending gold and esper.
Also, remember how food works and figure it into your game play and
strategy.

You need esper to build some buildings, but you don't need to build those
buildings to play esper. Just focus on the buildings where you only need gold
to build them.
Of course, I'm not trying to talk anyone out of buying esper. Buying esper and
making other in app purchases is the best way to support the developers, it's
just not necessary to play the game.
