Or, unless they were goofy and did as I, and just bought the 4S outright from AT&T on day one. I had purchased an iPhone 4 back in May of 2011, so was still under contract, but wanted the 4S, anyway. So, I paid the full price, plus the activation fee, and I can't remember if that was $18 or $36. I made the purchase via Apple's iPhone Apple Store app, and then I believe I got charged the activation fee once I setup the 4S. The 4s already had a sim card in it and so I just used that one; so, not sure what would have happened regarding the activation fee if I had taken the sim out of the 4 and just used it instead. Maybe I'll try to see if AT&T will unlock my 4S, just to see if they will.
