Hi, In the UK, selling a 3GS as unlocked typically adds around 40/50% to the sale value, but it's important to remember that there are many different factors that determin how much any given phone is worth.
One fairly easy way of finding out such information is to search eBay for 3gs'is and then filter the results so that only completed listings are shown which you can do from the search results page; just search for completed using your screen reader and you should be placed on the correct link. A combination of the displayed prices and the descriptions of the completed auctions should help you to make an informed choice regarding the unlock, although I'm almost certain that it will be worth doing.
