Hi don, >From what \i heard on the Today in i|OS Podcast most callers said that contacting AT&T about unlocking an older off-contract phone was easy and straight forward. You should not have to pay to have this done and in my opinion anybody who advertises that they can unlock your phone for whatever amount are scammers. If the phone is off-contract AT&T is obligated to unlock it or, I guess I should say, provide unlock instructions. If the phone is not off-contract, well, then if you unlock it by whatever means you are doing something illegal and I would not recommend that.
A friend of mine just contacted Telus here in Canada to have his old iPhone 4 unlocked and he said it was super easy as well.
