I believe that in the United States they passed a national law that such cards have a 5 year expiration date. It should be on the card when it expires. I've had the last 3 gift cards sitting here in my desk in the computer room for at least 3 years and they all worked fine.

Hi Joanne,

I just googled this and as far as I can tell promotional gift cards may have
an expiry date. This means that if you buy a discounted card, e.g. a $50
card for $40, then this card may have a date after which it can't be
redeemed any more.
However, it is my understanding that once you redeem the card and the credit
is on your account that then the credit does not expire.
I wrote to iTunes Store Support and asked them to confirm this since I would like to know as well. I also bought $150 credit for $120, but I redeemed all 3 cards right away so that the credit is now on my account. There really is
no reason why one wouldn't redeem a card immediately and this way I think
you avoid the issue of a code expiring.

Here in Canada this is in line with our laws regarding gift certificates.
Since 2008 only promotional gift certificates may have an expiry date. I own a retail store and if I sell a normal gift certificate to somebody I am not
allowed to write an expiry date on it. If I still own my business in 20
years and somebody walks in with a $100 gift certificate which has not been
used but which was sold 20 years ago I have to honor that.
I am sure Apple has to follow local or country laws regarding this which
means any regularly purchased iTunes Gift card should not have an expiry
date on it for redeeming it and I think once it is redeemed it should be
good for years and years.

Sieghard

Hi Sigard and all

Yes, thanks for putting my idea on to more of a constructive form of
discussion.
for me, i don't mind either way. I think, there are more of a problem with
purchasing give cards than using ITune credit or with credit card on itune
account.
One of the problem with having give cards for me is that, i bought a bunch
of ITune give card when it was on special, from memory was something like
$100 with $150 worth of value or something similar like that.
I end up bought a few cards, but, as the story goes, it end up expire as i
forgot i have those cards with me.
I think, i bought around $300 with $450 worth of cards, and end up, only
able to use $50 or $100 worth of credit as the rest were all expires.

I guess, what i trying to say is that, if you want to use the ITune give
card or credit methods, just be aware the expiry date on your credits,
specially if you having a physical give cards. If you do want to go with the give cards/ITunes credit option, just make sure that you can able to use and remember to use the credit witin the time frame. From memory it is something
either 12 months or 2 years.
With my give cards story, it was 2010 Christmass, and i only realize that i
have some cards left on end of last year/early this year.

Hi Don and Joanne,

If you want to buy an iTunes gift card online and receive the code by
email then you would have to send a gift card to yourself.
The difference would be not so much in security since you would have
to have a credit card on your iTunes account in order to buy the gift
card, but once you receive the email and redeem the card, you could
theoretically go in and remove your credit card information. If you
were paranoyed you could do this and just add the credit card
information for the time it takes to buy a new gift card each time you run
out of credit.
However, even if you are not paranoyed (like me) and feel it is safe
to have your credit card on iTunes, I still prefer to use a credit
balance from a gift card since that way I don't have a number of small
charges on my card each month if I buy a few apps and maybe some
songs. I use my credit card also for my business and it's not unusual
that I have between 40 and 60 transactions a month so I don't need any
more since I have to split up each statement into business and personal
amounts.
Anyhow, I think buying gift cards when they are on sale is the way to go.
About a month ago 7 1 1 had $50 gift cards on sale for $40 and I
bought 3 of them so I spend $120 but got $150 credit. I would have
normally only bought one or 2 cards, but since I want to get a 3-year
Seeing Eye subscription one of these days I decided to get enough
credit so I can pay the $130 which now in fact only cost me $104.

you can buy it thru itunes or apple online store directly. However, i
really don't know the different from having credit card on itunes
safely, than buying itunes credits using credit card online.
From my point of view, it is much safer to have credit card details
thru apple than purchasing it thru random online store.

Hi Don,

Do you mean where can you buy iTunes gift cards? If so then the
answer is just about everywhere. Here in Canada they are sold at
Safeway, most Drug Stores, The Source, 7 1 1 Convience stores, Best
Buy, Costco and probably
at
many more of the larger chain stores.

You can also send a gift card from within iTunes to a friend or, for
that matter, to yourself. Of course then you are using the credit
card on your iTunes account to buy the gift card, but you may also
use a credit card to buy it at a store. If I buy one at a store and
know I don't have anybody around maybe that evening, I often have
pulled out my iPhone and asked somebody at customer service to read
me the code and I punched it right in and redeemed it on the spot.
After that you can just tell them to throw it out since once it's
redeemed the card is useless.

Sieghard

is there anywhere you can purchase and get the physical number of the
card or does it have to be sent to your house?

If I may, I'd like to make a suggestion. Instead of using credit
cards where the info can be stolen etc, instead use gift cards
instead. Yes, I suppose it's always possible somebody can hack your
account and wipe out what ever you have in credit but the big thing
is, they can't make off
with
your credit card information if it isn't there. And, if you look
around, you can always find somebody having a sail on iTunes gift
cards. I got a
50
dollar card on special for 45 dollars. Your credit card won't do
that for you.

Just a thought you might wish to think about.

Hi Mitch,

Yes, you can use PayPal with iTunes since that is what I'm doing.
When
you
buy an app and such you will get purchase confirmation email
messages
from
both Apple and PayPal. As far as your purchasing settings, try
launching iTunes then opening "Store" menu and pressing enter on "View
Account."
You
will need your password (Listen closely to the message).
