Hi Mike,
Just out of curiocity, can you explain your statement "While fragmentation
is a bit of a problem on iOS, it's not nearly as bad".
Thanks,

I certainly will be upgrading to the five S. I was considering switching to
android, but I don't trust Google when it comes to universal design. Plus
the ecosystem is just too fragmented. While fragmentation is a bit of a
problem on iOS, it's not nearly as bad. I have a for S, and really want to
take advantage of the fingerprint reader. Plus my screen is misinterpreting
taps to mean two figner double taps. I'm pretty much broke at this point, so
won't be upgrading until the first of next month when I get my check, but I
definitely plan to do it then.

The number of megapixels in a camera is not the deciding factor as to

specifically commented on how the pictures coming from the Apple
camera looks better than any other phone regardless of the number of
pixels.

Hi Jonathan,
As always a well written and complete overview. I am also still on a
4S and feel much the same as you. There may yet be few uses of NFC
here in North America, but they are slowly increasing and once Apple
puts a NFC chip in the iPhone this could give the technology a bit of
a boost although I also feel there are still security volnerabilities
which need to be addressed before I’d trust it completely.
It is interesting how Apple often introduces something new and how
then said feature or technological advance is played down by the
media. Then within a year or so Android and others quietly come out
with their version of same feature/technology. I think SIRI was a
good example for this and I would be very surprised if we didn’t see
high-end Android phones suddenly having fingerprint sensors very
soon. Just as SIRI was a big incentive for me to upgrade, Touch ID is
probably at the top of the list for me this time along with the
faster performance.
I believe the iPhone 5C and 5S will be extremely successful for Apple
once again just as the 5 was which nobody really thought. With the 4S
Apple put out a true world phone and I feel that this is more true
for the 5C and 5S again as it was for the iPhone 5 last year.
Furthermore, there are a lot of iPhone 4 and 4S and even some 3GS
users out there who I think will most definitely upgrade. These
people especially if they come from the 3GS or 4 will be extremely
happy with how fast the iPhone will be and with the quality of the
pictures.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 may have a 41 Megapixel camera and by a few
might be touted as the gold standard in camera phones, but it would
be interesting to read an objective review and comparison of the 2 in
terms of picture quality and camera features.
After everything is said and done I will most likely upgrade although
it is a bit disappointing that I will have to wait for the initial
in-store release to order my shiny new 5S since Apple is not offering
5S preorders and I live in a very small and remote community where
the closest Apple Store is in Vancouver which by road is a 12-hour
drive or a 1.5 hour flight and I don’t want it bad enough to fly to
Vancouver to stand in line on Friday morning next week!

Sieghard

The iPhone 5s now has jitter protection, Apple specifically mentions
this on its site, saying that it helps people with unsteady hands
when taking pictures. The bunch of camera features taken together
really sound like they could represent an improvement.
Here's my blog post talking about the new phones and features as well
as my thoughts on whether I'll upgrade.

So long as one uses good technique for capturing the image, I expect
OCR recognition to significantly improve for two reasons: the
additional led will give better lighting for the camera, and the
wide-angle aperture will give greater area coverage at the same
distance. The A7 64 bit processor will increase OCR processing speed.
All that said, it will still be necessary that one has a steady and
still hand when taking the picture, and that the page be as close to
90 degrees as possible. Jitter (camera shaking), skew (text at angle
off true vertical), and shading (shadows cast by light / not enough
light / too much direct light, are the factors which cause difficulty
for blind people to capture images which are clear enough for OCR.
I use my iPhone 5 for OCR daily to very good effect. when I am able
to combine it with the StandScan Pro, my OCR is almost always just
about perfect.

Hi Annie and everybody,
I'm a little skeptical about the new iphone 5S performances on this
respect.
In fact, its Braille low speed and poor efficiency derive mainly from
the VoiceOver software and its way of bluetooth managing.
As well, I don't believe the most improved camera will be able to
dramatically increase text recognition capabilities. Talking of
simple black & white text recognition it especially depends on the
picture clearness and understandability rather than on the higher
megapixels resolution.
We will see!
Warmly,
Mario.

Hi.
The new IPhone could have some advantages for braille users, because
it is faster. I do not think there is much use of it, if you only use
speech, but braille speed e.g. in kindle could possibly be improved.
Best regards Annie.

Karen, the 5C will replace the 5. It will be offered in 16 and 32 GB

I've seen lots of posts about the purchase of these phones, but
haven't seen any posts about the features offered. What is the
difference between the two? I now have the 4S, and was planning on
upgrading to the 5, with the hopes that one would be offered at a
less expensive price. Someone mentioned the 5 will be no longer
available?
