Hi, just so you know, iOS differences are the same gap between major versions. What this means is that there was a big difference gap between 3.x and 4.x, then between 4.x and 5.x. The same is true for the difference between 5.x and 6.x, and guess what, between 6.x and 7.x. With all iOS updates, whether they are minor or not, a backup of your phone is recommended. Prior to iOS 5 this had to be done onto a PC running iTunes, but since cloud backup, you can now do this that way using wi-fi. I personally still prefer making the backup of the phone on the pc, the nice thing is you don't have to be syncing it on the pc regularly to have a backup of it using iTunes.

Hope this helps.

I am asking this question only because IOS-7 is so different. I have never had
a probblem upgrading the phone with wifi. Is there anything I need to do with
the phone to prepare it for IOS-7? I know a backup would be mportant, but is
there anything else?
