Hi, Standard best practices apply here but it looks like you've got it covered; a backup would be a good idea but is by no means essential. Additionally, I personally like to wait a few days before I update so that I can determin if Apple have introduced any bugs that will effect me; this also brings the advantage that the update servers will be less busy which will hopefuly decrease the chance of a failed update. As a side note, if you disregard the visual aspects, 7 isn't really that different to 6 at all; you'll have no problem getting used to it.
