Yes I had to enter my Apple Id password. Losing speech during updates is normal as it reboots into some kind of pre-os environment similar to Windows Pe or Re or whatever.

I wouldn't worry about it. I upgraded my 4 when iOs 6 came out, all
done over wifi, with no issues. Just make sure you have a good backup
and good electricity as updating over battery is a definite no no at
least for me.
