Do you have messages in your messages app? Regular text messages do not take up much space. I have several thousand messages in my messages app and, even with a few pictures, my messages app does not take up much space.
That said, if you have MMS messages, video messages, sound recording messages, and so on, these types of messages and message attachments take up quite a large amount of space. If neither of the above is the case, you will need to work directly with Apple.
