Sorry for the suggestion. Since I haven't experienced this problem
myself, all I could do was provide some suggestions. I thought the mute
key was a good suggestion though because it wouldn't surprise me if it
only muted the sounds from the speaker and not the head phones. Again,
sorry it came across as guessing.

Sounds like you flipped the mute switch on. Make sure the slider on
the side of the phone at the top is slid all the way to the front.
There's also the Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> voice Over On
-> Use sound effects option. Make sure this is turned on.
