thanks, did all of that, the fix was to kind of reset with holding home and
power, turning it on again then the volume button worked.

With your earphones unplugged, do something to make voiceover talk. Swipe
down with two fingers to read the screen, while it is doing that, hit the
Volume Up button several times.

don't guess what i have or have not done. the first thing i did was hit
the volume up button without ear buds plugged in.

Sounds like you flipped the mute switch on. Make sure the slider on
the side of the phone at the top is slid all the way to the front.
There's also the Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> voice Over
On -> Use sound effects option. Make sure this is turned on.
