Hi Tom,

Andy's answer is almost correct. LTE and 4G are actually thought of as the
same, however, AT&T chose to display their HSPA+ connection as 4G even
though theoretically it's 3G. I think maybe it's supposed to make people
feel better or that they are getting something faster than they are getting.

In any case, LTE if that is how AT&T is now showing that you have a true LTE
connection definitely is a lot faster than what they used to call 4G and
which most other carriers called 3G.

Sieghard

Subject: AT&T, 4G and LTE

Hi all, especially AT&T users with an iPhone 5 or higher,

This may seem like a stupid question, but I always tell my students that the
only stupid questions are the ones that aren't asked. So here goes. I've
used an iPhone 4 on AT&T for 2 and a half years with either wi-fi or 3g, and
now that I've had my 5S on AT&T for a couple of weeks now, I'm curious about
something. When I'm not connected to wi-fi and am out and about, sometimes
my status bar will say 4g, and other times it will say LTE. Is there a
difference between the two? What's 4g all about versus LTE, and why would I
see one versus the other?

Thanks,

Tom
