Yes I have reduce motion turned on. I have  automatic background refresh turned 
off. and I have followed all the advice for battery conservation and processes 
speed etc. I have my switcher pretty much empty, but one thing I would like to 
know, if I had apps that might drain the battery but they are not running will 
they affect it anyway?

re the battery backup: I actually do have one which isn't too bad. However, I 
prefer to use the iPhone 4 as  my battery backup because in that way I get 
other functionality as well. i'm guessing that the last thing I'll have to try 
is the reset to factory settings option and see if that improves things at all. 
because this loss of focus especially on apps such as the one for my crossword 
puzzle is a serious one it actually means I cannot use the 4 S for  the things 
that I can use it for on the 4.

I will let you know if I managed to find a way to improve things!
