It's true questions are answered quickly on the list, but I was thinking
of the situation where the onion is being pealed. I ask a specific
question like how to get to the second page of your home pages and then
ask a question on how to move apps from page to page and then a question
on how to create folders and then a question on how to change the apps
in the dock and so on. Each of these questions takes time to write are
then read by over a thousand members and half a dozen or so answers are
generated. Alternatively, a introductory podcast or book could answer
all of these questions, plus point out tips and tricks a new ueser would
never even think of asking, in one 30 or 60 minute sitting. (Note, I'm
not saying such questions can't or shouldn't be answered. I'm just
saying a new iPhone user should be able to ask for general help and a
pointer to a podcast/book should be a perfectly acceptable answer.)

I still don't see how a new user could be expected to come up with
something more specific and how a pointer to a podcast isn't a good
answer to this set of questions. If only specific questions are allowed
on list, how would a pointer to an introductory podcast or book ever be
a valid answer?

Hi,
I'm sorry if I didn't explain properly. I was not complaining about his
questions not being specific. I simply wanted to help by pointing out that
you do get more specific answers on this list if your questions are
specific.
Sorry that I don't buy the fact of having to wait to get an answer on this
list. Most questions get an answer in just a few minutes, especially at
this time of new releases.

I agree if you know to even ask for the glove compartment, but the touch
screen and the iPhone are so new to many users that I think it's OK to ask
for pointers to resources on how to get started. There are plenty of
podcasts and books out there especially written for the user new to the
iPhone, and I don't think there's anything wrong with someone asking for
that kind of information and getting pointed to those resources. One podcast
could answer literally dozens of specific questions that would come to the
list and be much more efficient for the new user than asking dozens of
specific questions on list and waiting for those answers.
I totally agree that questions to the list should be specific and subjects
should also be clear, but I think the new user, who doesn't even know where
to start, should feel free to ask for pointers to basic getting started
information, which is specific enough in it's own way.

Hi Christopher
I think our new user wants to get going with his phone. I think it is
easier to ask a specific question as to what he wants to do next and
get a real live answer. When someone is new at this, I still believe
that we can give them an answer to their direct question rather than
pointing them to something that can be too involved for their level.
I still think that we can allow ourselves to give a direct answer to a
direct question. After all, we were all beginners at one time or an
other
If I go on a list and ask where is the glove compartment in my car, it
makes more sense to me to tell me its in front of the passenger seat
rather than tell me to consult my owner's manual.

I don't understand your message Ron & Danvers. Dave asked for pretty
basic help getting started with his iPhone and Alex pointed him to
podcasts intended to help a new iPhone user get started. From what I'm
reading Dave got exactly what he was asking for.
I agree subject lines can be far too ambiguous and generic, but I'm
not sure that was the case in this situation. When someone just wants
basic information to get started, I think a subject line and a message
like this is appropriate. Of course, if Dave wanted something more
specific then he obviously wasn't specific enough for that, but like I
said, I don't think that was the case here.

Hi Dave,
Now you see what I meant. This is the kind of answer you get if you

Go to www.applevis.com <http://www.applevis.com> and search for "ios
primer". Also search Google for David Woodbridge iOS podcasts.
