Ariadne does not reliably announce approaching intersections. Ariadne has no
POI database, except what you create yourself. It was a somewhat useful
program back in the day, but has been supplanted by more functional
programs.

Subject: Re: BlindSquare, A Disappointment
Hi, just adding my few penny worth here. I think I see where Joe is
coming from. When I purchased Blind Square it was while it was on sale
for $9.99, and even then I thought it was too much for what it offered.
As it is now, the only time I use it is if I want to get cross street
information as I'm riding on a bus. Ariadne can easily do the same thing
and right now the only advantage that Blind Square has over Ariadne is
that it can still speak the information while it's in the background.
So, if that's worth more money to some, then great. I don't care for the
other features of Blind Square, and so don't use them. I'm sure they are
fine, but I haven't seen a use for my specific traveling needs.
Since my business is training people on the usage of various apps I went
ahead and kept it so I can offer alternatives to my clients when they
ask about what is out there. When I show an app to someone, I am not
biased. I give the good and bad points and let my clients decide for
themselves. I'm asked sometimes which one I personally prefer, and I
usually give an answer like this one which yes, I know is biased, but
everyone had their preferences. Just because Blind Square might not be
my favorite navigation app, it's certainly not my worst, and as I said,
it does have its good uses.

Agreed. Joe, don’t feel bad at all for expressing an alternative view. I
haven’t bought the app so have no loyalty to it, I have just heard a lot
of good things. It is nice to hear the other side of the coin, so to
speak.
As to content, the app pulls from the OSM (Open Street Map) project as
well as Foursquare, so if you are in a low-population area it is
possible that not a lot of data about your surroundings has made it to
those services yet. As others have said, the developer is always
responsive to emails, so shoot him a message before you give up on the
app completely. Best of luck.

Hi Joe,
I may differ with you on the usefulness of Blind Square, but I hope
just because you are a minority voice, you don’t stop expressing your
opinion.
It is rather good to have differing opinions on this kind of a list.
It would be rather boring if everyone came to the same conclusions
about all things.
If the app doesn’t meet your needs, by all means see if you can get a
refund and then delete it if you do.
In fact, I would take the approach with Apple that you didn’t know
whether it would meet your needs without buying it since there is no
light version to try out first and now you know it doesn’t and would
like a refund.
Good luck,
Richard

Hi Alex,
I don’t want my personal opinion to taint your interest in purchasing
the app. I do feel like the skunk at the picnic for being the only
person who has found the app disappointing, but after another round of
putting the app through its paces, I don’t get the wow factor. WhereTo
lets you choose from a wider selection of business categories and
gives you the same distance monitoring that BlindSquare provides.
Ariadne performs the same function you mention regarding the bus
travel example. I’m not saying the app can’t be great for some people,
but for me the excitement just isn’t there for the money you pay
compared to other orientation apps. I knew not to expect turn-by-turn
directions. I knew it was not a fully functional navigation app like
the Seeing Eye app, but I was expecting better accuracy, better
stability and, frankly, better coverage than what BlindSquare is
providing. The app is not providing nearly the amount of information
it ought to be providing for an area I am very familiar with. Anyway,
I’ll stop slamming the thing. I know people are loyal to it, but at
$24 I thought it worth sharing my candid thoughts on the thing.
Besides, if Apple refuses my refund request, I’ll have no choice but
to start liking the blasted thing.--Joe
