Hi Dan, When you received your 5S the SIM Card was already in the phone, it just was not activated. The original poster was asking about using a phone without SIM Card basically as an iPod Touch. If you take a phone that has not been set up or activated and take the SIM out you can't use it. Once it's activated and you have gone through the setup screens in case of a new phone or one that has been restored you can then take the SIM out and it will continue to work. I can say this for sure because I just sent my old 4S to my fiancee in the Philippines and after I restored the phone I removed my Micro SIM and continued to use the phone on WiFi to load some apps and so on.

Sorry, I haven't followed this thread that closely, but for anecdotal evidence, when I received my IPhone 5S, I didn't activate it immediately. I was just coming on call for work and couldn't be dealing with the issues of learning a new phone while trying to field calls and respond to time sensitive texts. So, I didn't activate the phone, continued using my old phone, but played around with the new IPhone via my WiFi connection at home and at work. Seemed like it did nearly everything but make or receive phone calls. When I came off my on-call rotation, I activated the phone and just went on from there.
