Usually, I find that if I unplug the cable and then plug it back in, things work fine. I think the reason they did this was to thwart unlicensed cables. I had a few generic fcables and a Chinese battery pack. Once iOS 7 came out they all stopped working, giving me that message, which I still get occasionally with my Apple cable.
