The best way to back up your iPhone is the way that provides you with the opportunity to restore everything you need if your phone is lost or has to be reactivated and reset to default settings.
iCloud may be the easiest way to backup but I don't believe you can backup your Apps to iCloud which could be an issue if you're not running the latest version of an app. Also, you only get 5GB free with iCloud so how much you can backup without paying could be limited. I prefer backing up my iPhone 5 to an external hard drive using iTunes and making sure all my Apps and data are on the computer as well. Different strokes for different folks.
