Hello Alan, You are correct, of course. However, one thing I'd like to add is that, generally speaking, it only takes a few minutes to back up a device to a computer.
I have a 64GB iPhone 5 S. I sync it to my iTunes Library on/through a six-year-old Windows 7 Desktop computer. Generally speaking, it takes less than 10 minutes to either sync new purchases and/or tracks to the Library. This includes making a backup at the same time. At last count, I have over 2000 music tracks on my iPhone along with 40 episodes of television situation comedies, 4 full-length movies, over 100 applications, and much, much more. Now, were I to wipe the phone and attempt to restore all of this data back to the phone, it could take upwards of an hour or so but I've only needed to do this when initializing a new device.
