Hi Jonathan,

I really haven't noticed any real improvement with shortening of the delays
when using the streamer. The streamer also wasn't my first choice as a way
to listen to music either. The streamer I had did sound rather muffled. I
have used a neck loop in the past. I thought the sound quality was much
better than what I received from the streamer. Both clearly disappointing
compared to a set of Bose.

You raise a good point about using a cable as opposed to a streamer. If
individuals are open to using a cable instead of a streamer or the apps that
are now available, I think it broadens the choice of hearing aids that we
can consider when buying. As you well know, access to IOS devices is only
one part of the picture. Hearing in noisy environments, localizing sound for
mobility purposes, and enhancing overall communication are also issues that
need to be considered.

I agree the audiologist is key to helping the individual select the correct
hearing aids for their lifestyle. I have been with the same audiologist for
15 years.

I am going to read your blog posts over the weekend.

Kindest Regards,

Lynda

Right, I realised you weren't using a Streamer and that's why I was
interested in your experience. I was curious to find out if Apple had been
able to do any work on latency. I find the latency with a streamer was just
bad enough that it affected typing on the virtual keyboard, and that's why I
went back to a direct cable connection.

Obviously if these new made for iPhone hearing aids could solve that
latency, it would be a huge breakthrough for VO users who also wear hearing
aids.

Jonathan, I'm not certain about your question because I'm not using a
streamer at this point. At least not the way I understand streamers. As far
as latency is concerned, I do notice delays particularly when using the mail
program. With everything else, it seems okay.

Hi Les, my big question about your set-up is, what's latency like? This is
the big problem with using Bluetooth streamers, it's noticeably laggy with
VO.

Hi Terrie and Don,

The aids I am trying out send all of VoiceOver's speech through the aids.
It's like using a bluetooth headset. Now, the sounds from the iPhone such
as notification alerts and the ringing of the phone when calls come in go
through the iPhone speaker. Apple hasn't implemented phone sounds to go
through hearing aids. As for using a streamer, I don't use one, although I
know a VO user who does use a streamer with her aids. This is all very new
for me, so I don't know a lot yet, but I hope to get these working properly
on Monday when I meet with my audiologist.

Wow Less, tell us more about the hearing aids and the iPhone. I have to go
back to my audiologist, and, this sounds real interesting.

Subject: Hearing Aids and the iPhone

A few days ago, I received two hearing aids called the Starkey Haylow. They
are optimized for and compatible with the iPhone. I am using mine with the
iPhone 5S. I am not receiving sounds through both of my ears. That did
occur for about two minutes, but didn't hold. I have been in contact with
my audiologist and Starkey Tech Support. I have tried their suggestions
which include disconnecting and re-pairing both aids, powering off the phone
and opening the battery door on both aids to re-initialize them which did
occur and probably other things without success. Also, I notice that there
is a key conflict between turning on and off of Voiceover and getting to the
Hearing Aid options, triple click home for both. Although I tried to
re-assign the behavior of triple click home from VoiceOver to something
else, I couldn't easily get to the hearing aid options anyway. Has anybody
had experience with this model? If so, suggestion on resolving this would
be appreciated. Also, since I am in the evaluation phase and have 45 days
to decide whether I wish to keep this model, I'm wondering if there are
other aids that are compatible with the iPhone that I might wish to
consider? Thanks.

Les
