Hi Jose, As Gerado already pointed out, it is simply a means for privacy since as a blind person you can't always be sure that somebody isn't looking at your phone from a few feet away.
The screen curtain actually does nothing to brightness, it simply artificially blacks out the screen. There have been claims that using the screen curtain saves battery, but this is not correct. I at one point asked Apple Accessibility and received a reply stating that use of the screen curtain does not improve battery life. If you don't have sighted people using your phone you can turn brightness down to 0% which actually will save you battery. Keep in mind that this simply means the backlight is turned to 0% and it is still possible to see and read what is on the screen although it is much more difficult especially in bright light.
