Thanks for taking the time to help me, I tried it for the first time this morning. It is pretty impressive to say the least! Do you know if the screen locks when you are on a route? The phone is in my pocket but if I turn it up, I can hear it easily. Caused some confusion on the bus I think :-) Is there a walking mode as well?

I assume Apple Maps has these features, and it was just user ignorance on my part. Google Maps will also store your route locally on your phone. You'll need an internet connection to download it originally, but if you end up driving through an area with no coverage, as I did last weekend, you still get turn by turn directions. I'm not sure if Apple Maps has this feature or not. Finally, I just find Google Maps to have a simpler more intuitive interface. Again, that could just be what I'm used to though, and it's definitely subjective. Both apps are free, so there's no issue with having both on your phone and giving each a try.
