The screen does not lock by it's self. If you want to lock it and walk or ride for a while, you will still hear the turn by turn directions. You can always unlock the phone to check the screen.

When my wife uses it, who's sighted, she just leaves it on her lap while she's driving so she can refer to the route on the screen. Yes there is a walking or pedestrian mode. Early in the process, when you're selecting your route, there should be some tabs at the top, and you can choose between driving, walking and public transit. I'm glad I could help.
