My iPhone 5 has gotten into one of these lockup situations two, maybe three,
times since getting it in October, 2012. It hasn't done it recently, and
perhaps if it does it again, I can get it going myself, being that perhaps I
have more knowledge about how to get it going again now, than I had then. I
remember that holding down the home and power buttons would not restart it. In
all the locked up situations, luckily, I was here, and not out somewhere away
from my computer. Simply connecting it to iTunes on the computer got it going.
I remember the last time, it took it about a minute to sort things out, I was
getting worried, but it came back on, and everything was okay. I would not
want one of these devices without a computer running iTunes. I have coworkers
who use their IOS devices without iTunes on a computer, I know it can be done,
but I also know about their having to take their IOS device to the Apple store
to get it going again.

Thanks, Jonathan! I did try warm reset to no avail so I've made careful note
of your instructions re DFU mode. And, sighing deeply, I'll turn Find My Phone
back on! It's good that this community of expertise is out there! Harry

Hi harry, yes, this is part of the new anti-theft measures introduced with
iOS 7. Usually they can provide peace of mind, but occasionally they can be a
hindrance to a legitimate attempt to get out of a bind.
The first thing I would do in your situation is to warm reset the phone.
Hold down the home and power buttons for about six seconds, then release them
and the phone should reboot.
If the problem had persisted, you could have put the phone into DFU (Device
Firmware Update) mode. To do this, connect the phone to iTunes, then hold down
the home and power buttons for about 6 seconds. Release the power button, but
keep the home button held down until iTunes pops up with a message saying that
it's detected a phone in DFU mode. You can then restore the OS, then restore
your backup. A bit drastic, but it's the only way around it in the
circumstances you describe.

My iPhone 5s touch screen stopped working today and no matter what I or
my sighted partner did we could not get it to work reliably. It would not even
register the numbers for the pass code despite switching the phone off and on
again. I connected the phone to my PC running iTunes in order to do a restore
from latest backup but I got a message saying I had to turn off Find my phone
on the iCloud settings of the iPhone before it would allow me to restore from
backup. Fortunately the touchscreen started cooperating again at this point so
I was able to get into the phone settings and turn off Find my phone on iCloud
before doing the restore from backup. But what if I had not been able to get
into my phone? Is there any way to turn off Find my phone from within iTunes
while the phone is plugged in? Harry
