I'm not sure if I'm included in the Android fan boys or not, but I don't consider myself an Android fan boy. I do have a Nexis 7, and I like the greater degree of control I have in Android over IOS, and there are somethings I prefer doing on my Nexis 7 over my iPhone, but I got an iPhone because it was more accessible, and I've never said Android accessibility is on par with Apple's.

Android accessibility has improved quite a bit, and a lot if expected when Android L comes out shortly. Android and Talk Back do just work differently than IOS and VoiceOver, so people making the jump from Apple to Android will have to do things differently. That being said, I don't think this explains all of the accessibility short comings in Android. I think people can use Android just fine, and Android has a lot to offer that appeal to both the blind and the sighted, but I wouldn't say that Android has caught up with IOS yet when it comes to accessibility.

I believe that IOS is more secure than Android, but this is because of the closed nature of the Apple ecosystem. I've read that there are more security flaws in IOS than there are in Android, but it's harder to exploit them because Apple doesn't open up it's file system or application store. That being said, I think the security knock on Android is blown out of proportion. You can get antimalware for Android, which you cannot do for Apple, if you're worried about malware, but common sense is your biggest safe guard against security vulnerabilities, just as it is on Windows, Linux and the Mac.

I don't follow the statements regarding how Google's customers aren't Android users and how Google makes money by collecting information from as many users as possible. I know Microsoft still charges for it's operating system, but I doubt Microsoft gets much money from end users who actually go out and buy a copy of the operating system. Other than that, I can't think of a company that makes any money from selling it's operating system to end users, so I'm not sure how Android is different than other operating systems in that sense.

I realize Google is in the information business, but I don't know how Android plays into this. Sure, if you get a Google Play edition of an Android phone, you can sign up for a bunch of Google services, but I don't know how this is any different from getting an Apple ID, using iCloud, shopping in the App Store, using iTunes Radio and so on. Maybe Google gets more advertising revenue from other companies than Apple, but Apple is also collecting information on it's users and using that to market it's own products.

As I said, I don't consider myself a fan boy of either Apple or Android, but I do find myself amazed at how many unfounded opinions there are out there in both camps and how many people parrot what they've heard someone else say or pass on dated information. I'm not sure if I'm considered an Android fan boy on this list, but I wouldn't be surprised if some consider me an Apple fan boy on the Android list since I am correcting some pretty blatant misconceptions and erroneous information held by some Android users regarding IOS and the iPhone.

I'm not trying to convince anyone to use one phone over the other, but I do think this attitude that one phone is better than the other, to the point where misinformation is passed along, is detrimental to the blindness community. Choice is good, and it's good that we have choice as blind users. Instead of getting defensive when someone buys an Android phone instead of an iPhone, we should feel elated that we have this choice.

Hi Joseph,

I think once iOS 8 is in the hand of the public Apple Accessibility will get
the message. As for going to Android, I doubt it's an improvement. Yes, I
know there are some Android fan boys on this list who say Android
accessibility is really good now, but I still think that Android itself is
lacking and the biggest turn off for me is the security and the fact that
Google's customers are not the users of Android but the advertisers who pay
them the big money. Android is not making them money and Google makes their
money by trying to get as much information from its users as possible. This
ois not the case with Apple.

Hello Listers,
Somehow, this really needs to be brought to Apple's attention. I mean in a
big way. In such a way that they will be willing to really take
accessibility problems seriously. While I don't know how to best go about
this, perhaps others might have some really constructive ideas and ways to
move forward with them.
While I am interested in purchasing a new iPhone 6 or 6 plus, I don't know
if I want to sink my money and have all kind of aggravations that could have
been prevented in the first place.
I suppose I'll hold off for quite a while.
Who knows, I might even go over to Android, just a thought.

I usually hold off a couple of days mostly because everybody and their

hold off until we see what others are saying about it. Sure there are
always those who will complained if you hang them with a new rope but
perhaps in this case there may well be fire with all that smoke.

That's true, the difference here though, at least in my mind, is that
this is coming from someone on the list who I think is pretty level
headed. If I recall correctly, Sieghard was recommending people
upgrade to IOS 7 when it came out because the advantages out weighed
the annoyances and the different ways a few things worked. In this
case, you have someone who I respect quite a bit on the list sounding the
alarm.
This gives me much more pause then the normal run of the mill
complaints that come out whenever anything changes. I'll be looking
forward to more information from Sieghard and others once IOS 8 is
released and they aren't bound by the NDA they agreed to.

We all survived it! I suspect we'll do the same with iOS 8! <grin>

I can't say too much because of the NDA I agreed to when I signed up
for my developer account, but Pablo is wise to stay with iOS 7 for
now, there will be a lot of "pissing and moaning" as you put It Ed,
that I can guaranty. I can only advise those who like their phone to
work very nicely and especially those who like to use their phone
with a bluetooth keyboard a lot to maybe wait a bit, iOS 8 is
probably one of the buggiest or maybe the buggiest release Apple has
done.

Take care,
Sieghard

Oh, yes. I learned the lesson. Maybe for June 2015 IOs 8 will be
with no bugs, then I will install it in my phone.

to wait rather than installing the update and spending a lot of time
criticizing Apple for such a bad update.
