Yes, Voiceover is rock-solid with 8.1. Sometimes for me, Voiceover would start randomly toggling on and off every five seconds in 8.0.2. Several times, I had to reboot using the home and sleep/wake buttons, which I usually only use as a last resort. I'm almost hoping this is your problem and that it isn't a worn home button.
