Back when we were working with it, which was years ago, the subrenderers
were using windows, so we wanted to run each subrenderer in VirtualGL to
redirect the rendering into a Pbuffer, but we also wanted to disable
VirtualGL's readback of the window, because ParaView read back the
subrenderer windows on its own.

PV may support Pbuffers now for subrendering processes, in which case
the above technique would not be necessary.  I haven't played with PV
since 2007, so I can't say for sure.
