Hi Tim, I found a reasonable work-around for the force-mode-line-update problem and committed it. Revision 1104.
It would be good if you can add another menubar item to the VM menubar. "Emacs" -> "Switch to Emacs menubar" This is in addition to the "Help" -> "Switch to Emacs menubar" item. (I find it a bit counter-intuitive to go to the Help menu to do this.)
