Building with VMS debugging definitely impacts speed, since it turns
optimizations off. Building with the DEBUGGING flag to enable -D also slows
things down, since it wedges more stuff in the code path. The perl debugger
only slows things down if you use it.
This all would've made a lot more sense if I was clearer when I started... :(
