It was released already. I think February 2000.

5.6.0 does not have those patches. As far as the
bleadperl_leading_to_5_7_0 kits I am not sure all are in.
I do know that it has a bunch of VMS specific patches.
I strongly suspect that Charles Lane's pipe patches are
not in the bleadperl_leading_to_5_7_0 kits
(though I could be wrong).

p5p is getting ready to release 5.7.0. Sometime after that 5.6.1 (the
stable successor to 5.6.0) will also be released sans the "experimental"
features that have been put into the 5.7.0 kit.

That depends on your needs. 5.6.0 has better Unicode support than
5.005_03, but they both have some shortcomings in that department.
For production here I am sticking with 5.005_03 simply because I need
to support as uniform a version of Perl as I can across many platforms
including OS/390 and the way that the utf8 pragma was integrated into
5.6.0 renders it unbuildable on an EBCDIC platform.

A 5.005_03 patched to take care of the MM_VMS troubles ought to be
fine for most uses. There are known bugs in both 5.005_03 and 5.6.0
though.
