I had the same problem (exactly like yours).  My LAN has Win98, WinXP Pro,
Win2000 server/wrkstn and RedHat7.2 Linux.  After following Greg's
instructions I am able to work on any vnc server from any system including
XP using the browser or the client.

my xstartup file looks like this now after modifications (just last line
added)

#!/bin/sh
xrdb $HOME/ .Xresources
setroot -solid grey
xterm -geometry 80x24+10+10 -ls -tilte "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
exec gnome-sesion &
