I finally sorted things out using RFB. Worked immediately as a charm. But for vncserver, definitively no luck. So rfb server on the linux side, and vnc client on the XP side using port #0 ... oh well, at least that works ... Thanks to everybody anyway

This allows everyone to make a connection to your XServer - so only in private network a good idea. If you are in a bigger network, you can specify a host by name to be allowed.
