Gerry -

This email group is often quite hostile to new users. Some members feel compelled to repeat the mantra "You would get your answer if you had/would read the instructions".

This is not really helpful to someone who may be intimidated with the technology and may have tried in vain to find the relevant information in the FAQs, etc.

I believe that the list is for *all* users - from newbie through advanced developer - and should be a place that we can turn to for help, not lectures about our lack of ability. If some people don't want to help the newest users, they should not bother with lectures and simply remain in the background until a problem is presented that meets their personal requirements for complexity.

Having said that, it is important to read the introductory FAQs to help get acquainted with the technology. Some of the more detailed documentation is confusing, misleading, incomplete or simply wrong. But people are always trying to improve it and it is *much* better than it was a couple of years ago.

Please feel free to contact me (I have sent you a separate email with details) and I will be glad to walk you through the process. I still remember the personalized help that I received when I first started to use VNC and it saved me days of digging through confusing documentation.

I recently got ADSL service and the terminology is somewhat confusing to me.
I have a single, static IP address and would like to use RealVNC to be able
to reach my office computer from home.

Can anyone point me to a 'plain language' source of information about how to
set up my DSL modem/router and the RealVNC software so that I can reach me
specific desktop pc? Or if someone would be interested in writing privately
to me and kind of guiding me through the process, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Gerry Egan
