And my two cents too: we're also using optical mice in my company but I have 
never encountered any problem with VNC together with screen saver.  But I have to add 
a few remarks:
* most of them are plugged as PS/2 device (even if USB is available).
* whether they are plugged as PS/2 or USB, I don't install any driver provided for 
them.  I just use default driver installed automatically by the system.  Sure, maybe 
some extra buttons might not be working in this case, but since my colleagues don't 
care (they don't see the interest to use all five fingers!), I don't care either.
* in Win2000, I can't find any default options within screen-saver concerning mouse.
