So, if the IP address shown as the source of the protocol error was the SMTP proxy, the log is actually showing the mail that came from various other sources that got filtered due to SPAMFLT0.txt

If this is the case, I am happy. If there is another reason my proxy is being blocked, I need to find out. Other mail is going through so I don't see a complete block.

Subject: [VOPmail Beta] what is the "protocol filter"

The Protocol filter does indeed refer to the SPAMFLT0.txt filter. As the example you posted below shows the mail is filtered based on a subject. However, the earlier message does not show a reason which would imply that the IP Address of the sending machine is being blocked by the filters. Im not sure if other blocks also make the same entry however you could check by looking at the SPAMFLT0.txt file for the IP Address or hostname and checking other areas where SMTP connections can be blocked to see which one would be blocking this.

On the control interface that is called the message filter. When it says protocol, I assume it means SMTP, POP, IMAP, etc. I have not had that portion of logging turned on before and have just noticed it. The ERR log indicates that it is is using the spmflt01.txt filter by saying:

<< 554 Filtered out by Filter 0 because "Subject" =

But this is different. (or so it appears)
