The meeting was much earlier than you are thinking Eric. It was about 2 years after the first ruby laser was invented IIRC and no one knew about the latest technologies that have essentially unlimited power. All the inventor understood was that his ruby laser saturated at a level that was much too small to be seriously dangerous. He was not able to visualize the future.
