I suspect that the answer is a combination of two things, environmental heat energy, and chemical combination energy released by the formation of metal-hydride. The implication being that the energy release upon recreation of H2 is not nearly as large as 4.5 eV, because the majority of the molecule formation energy is required to break the metal-hydride bond.
