I don't think there is any possibility of stopping global warming, but
this does not mean we should stop trying. First of all, the warming
is caused by several processes, only one of which we can control, i.e.
CO2 emission. Second, the big generators of CO2, such as the US and
China will not be able to adjust fast enough to prevent runaway
heating caused by methane release. The only rational approach is to
develop as many energy sources as possible because large amounts of
energy will be needed to relocate cities and to build dikes where
relocation is not practical. Such an effort will have additional
benefits as well. For example, cheap energy will lower the cost of
food production, make water available in arid regions, and distribute
the wealth more evenly, Meanwhile, I think planners should count on
the sea level rising and on food production being shifted to other
regions. If scaring people and promising success if they get on board
a program is what it takes, then I'm all for the effort. However, when
planning your life, don't count on success in stopping global warming.
