Well, the U.S. began serious preparations before that, in 1939 and 1940, including the first peacetime draft and a massive increase in arms production. We could never have won the war otherwise. It was a lot closer than people realize. We have far more resources than we realize; we could easily build dikes and at the same time take steps to drastically reduce CO2, and also to remove existing CO2 from the atmosphere. Furthermore, we could reduce the amount of sunlight that reaches the earth with various techniques discussed in the latest issue of Scientific American, including the orbiting parasols I have discussed here. All of these steps would be far easier and cheaper with cold fusion. - Jed
