No one denies that the Shuttle was a major improvement. So was the IBM Stretch computer. If they had made one Shuttle, learned lesson from it, and then tried again with a new design it would have been worth it. They committed to a new design too early, and tried to accomplish too much. That often happens in commercial engineering. It is not just NASA that makes that mistake. - Jed
