We have successfully sent semi-autonomous robots to Mars. That level of technology would be sufficient to stop just about any comet with a 20-year warning. A century from now we will have far better space technology. 500 to 1,000 years from now I expect most of the solar system will be inhabited and we will be harvesting comets and asteroids. - Jed
