As a practical matter, stress and fear interfere with things like sleep, and that causes ill health. It may be difficult to separate out cause and effect. A bad situation such as a breakdown in your marriage causes stress, and stress then contributes to the breakdown, in a vicious circle. The brain is an organ like any other, and the nervous system extends everywhere, so it stands to reason that a problem in the brain (such as stress) will have an effect on other organs and processes other than brain function. Diabetes or a broken leg will also interfere with all kinds of other systems. - Jed
