Some people have reported that tungsten does work. Mizuno, Biberian and others have made high temperature superconductor material that reportedly works, as a proton conductor (like gas phase electrolysis). A few years ago some Japanese researchers were talking about powerful magnets made from ordinary materials instead of rare earths.
