Not true. A type B platinum thermocouple is highly accurate in the
range 1400 -1600C. From experience I don't believe any single sensor
until it has been calibrated and also compared with something else. The
thermocouple manufacturers used to lack field experience and. for
example, didn't know how quickly the Rhodium diffused into the platinum
leg of a type S couple nor that it was necessary to make the wire
diameter larger to avoid premature failure. All the pyrometers have
some problems and users develop a preference for a certain type, like a
disappearing filament, based on experience. Even though that actually
depends on the user's eye.
I suspect there is still much to learn about the inside of the E-Cat.
Others have speculated on Al2O3 and I have used a fused cast version of
that as a refractory block in glass furnaces. The fused version is good
against diffusion but attacked by alkali vapor. It is clear we have not
been given the whole story about the heating elements and I Will be
surprised if Rossi gives this information away. It would have been
comparatively simple to provide confirmation of the temperatures and I'm
sorry that it wasn't. I suspect Rossi still believes that only a
commercial unit will end skepticism and meanwhile doesn't want to give
more away.
