Not true. A type B platinum thermocouple is highly accurate in the range 1400 -1600C. From experience I don't believe any single sensor until it has been calibrated and also compared with something else. The thermocouple manufacturers used to lack field experience and. for example, didn't know how quickly the Rhodium diffused into the platinum leg of a type S couple nor that it was necessary to make the wire diameter larger to avoid premature failure. All the pyrometers have some problems and users develop a preference for a certain type, like a disappearing filament, based on experience. Even though that actually depends on the user's eye.
