Mike, thank you for taking the time to reply. I assume the Netgear FVG318 is the cheap brother of the FVS318. The FVG318 does neither support mode config nor xauth. The admin settings of the FVG318 don't show these options.
Is it possible to use the shrew client with a VPN gateway that doesn't have mode config and xauth? You MUST use mode config with the shrew client and FVS318. I just set one up this past week. Make sure that the mode config IP address that's assigned is not the same subnet as the VPN router's internal LAN address. For example, if you use 192.168.1.1 as the VPN LAN gateway address, then make sure your assigned IP addresses by mode-config are something like 192.168.2.x You must also use XAUTH. Setting it up was very straightforward. Sorry I can't recall the steps at the moment but I did read about it in the howto section of the the shrew.net website. Hope this helps!
