Adding to Michal W's comment. As far as I know the NetGear OEM VPN client only works on Windows XP...not Vista or Windows 7, which is why I suspect you might have opted for the Shew client to begin with. It's certainly why I'm using it. There was rumor that Netgear was going to release an updated client to support Windows Vista/7, but I've not yet heard anything official to that effect.

You MUST use mode config with the shrew client and FVS318. I just set one up this past week. Make sure that the mode config IP address that's assigned is not the same subnet as the VPN router's internal LAN address. For example, if you use 192.168.1.1 as the VPN LAN gateway address, then make sure your assigned IP addresses by mode-config are something like 192.168.2.x You must also use XAUTH. Setting it up was very straightforward. Sorry I can't recall the steps at the moment but I did read about it in the howto section of the the shrew.net website. Hope this helps!
