Hi Alexis & al,
I unfortunately do not have such fresh Win8 computer available. Mine is almost
fresh considering a Full Win8.1 Repair/Upgrade has been required in order to
formally uninstall the Cisco VPN Client … I was unable to do that before that
repair.
Do you know if a new Shrew VPN client version is on the drawing board? (i.e.:
v2.2.3 or v3). I would be more than willing to give it a trial. I have nothing
to lose …
I know other Shrew users have got problems after the big Microsoft KB3000850
had been installed, which is the latest Microsoft SChannel implementation and
that is specific to Win8.1. To make Shrew working, they have been forced to
remove this KB. Unfortunately, for corporate policy reasons, I can NOT afford
to do soL
Does anyone, having Win8 or more preferably Win8.1 installed, could send me an
export of their current registry for the following Key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
I used the Windows Sysinternals Process Monitor v3.1
<http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx> to monitor the
registry activities while running the Shrew v2.2.2 installer and I have noticed
some ACCESS_DENIED when the Shrew installer is setting some very specific
registry values à RootDevice and FilterList from
{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000?\Linkage. I would use this export to
validate my current Shrew installation (from a registry point-of-view) and
potentially manually fixing it.
IMHO, any new Shrew versions will have to be tested against this KB3000850
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3000850> . As far as I know, Microsoft is NOT
anymore providing improvements over Win8 (only patches and security fixes) … by
opposition to Win8.1 which is still on the improvement path. As far as can see,
this KB will be integral part of any new Windows releases.
Have a great dayJ

Hello again,
Does anyone has any idea on what could be the root cause of the Error
0x80070005 with possible cause being “Access is denied” that happens during the
installation?
Could it be due to registry access? file-system access? or both?
I am willing to go deeper into the investigation but before doing this I would
like to know if anyone would have seen such error before?
HI Jean,
Never get this error !
Do you have try with a "fresh" install of Windows 8 ? you get the same error
Do you have search on Internet, there is a lot of stuff about error 0x80070005

NOTE: This is the remake of a previous email that has been blocked because of
its size due to my usage of screen captures. I have replaced the screen
captures by the text they were containing.
Hello Alexis & al,
Alexis, my previous email was answering your last question (please see below).
After manually cleaning-up any remaining traces from the previous installation
attempt of the Shrew VPN Client 2.2.2 (i.e.: Registry, ProgramData, Program
Files), I have ran again the “vpn-client-2.2.2-release.exe” and here are a few
more detailed screen captures:
While running the installer, I am seeing the following error screen:
Error 0x80070005: Couldn’t install the network component.
Possible cause: Access is denied
… and then (as if everything went fine), I am getting the following completion
dialog:
Shrew Soft VPN Client has been installed on your computer.
Click Finish to close this wizard.
After the installation has been completed and after a reboot, I have captured
the following screen that shows that NO virtual Network Adapter had been
created:
NO virtual Network Adapter
… but, as per this other screen capture, the Schrew Soft filter had been
installed:
Schrew Soft Lightweight Filter is installed to the existing Network Adpaters.
Then, when I uninstalled the Shrew VPN Client 2.2.2, I have captured the
following error screen:
Error 0x80070005: Couldn’t apply the changes after uninstalling vflt.
Possible cause: Access is denied
I hope the above screen captures will help to figure-out what is going wrong
during the installation ….
PS: After all the above, I manually cleaned-up any remaining traces from this
other installation attempt of the Shrew VPN Client 2.2.2 (i.e.: Registry,
ProgramData, Program Files).
I wish great holidays to all of you J

Bonjour Alexis,
Thanks very much for your very quick replyJ
I was having the Cisco Systems VPN Client 5.0.07.0440 that has been finally
removed after a long and painful saga … where, I have been forced to do a
Windows 8.1 Update / Repair in order to successfully remove this client. Before
that, I was unable to remove it. When I removed-it, right after the Windows 8.1
Update / Repair, I have done so without any kind of error or warnings. I can
also confirm that the “DNE/Deterministic Network Enhancement” is NOT anymore
listed into the Network Connection configurations.
Do you believe there would be some remaining traces somewhere that would
prevent the Shrew VPN Client 2.2.2 to install correctly?
Have great holidaysJ
